Male Betta Halfmoon Tricolour
Betta fish continue to dominate the selective breeding world thanks to the near-endless variety of colours and fin types available, and the Halfmoon Tricolour is one of the most visually exciting strains in the hobby. The combination of three distinct colours spread across the body and fins, paired with the dramatic 180-degree halfmoon tail spread, gives this fish a true showpiece quality that instantly draws attention in any aquarium.
The Male Halfmoon Tricolour usually displays a vibrant combination of red, white, and blue, though some individuals may carry yellow, black, or turquoise depending on the breeding line. The body often begins with a stronger, solid colour through the face and shoulders before transitioning into a blend of contrasting tones through the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins. When the fish flares, the halfmoon tail opens into a broad semicircle that showcases the full tri-colour pattern in an almost fan-like display. In planted aquariums with darker backgrounds, the contrasting colours become even more vivid and create a flowing, almost painted effect as the fish swims.
Sexing is straightforward, with males showing the dramatic half-moon finnage, brighter colour saturation, and territorial display behaviour. Like other bettas, the male builds a bubble nest near floating plants or calmer surface areas before collecting and guarding the eggs after spawning.
Tank Recommendations for Your Male Betta Halfmoon Tricolour
A single male should be housed in an aquarium of 20–40 litres or larger, with planted aquariums strongly recommended to showcase the finnage. Because of the larger fins, gentle water flow is essential. Floating plants, driftwood, and resting leaves work especially well, while darker substrates and green plants make the tricolour patterning stand out beautifully.
Suitable Tank Buddies
These bettas are territorial but can still be kept with carefully selected peaceful fish.

Feeding Your Male Betta Halfmoon Tricolour
These fish are very easy to feed and naturally prefer surface-feeding foods. The ideal diet would be a high-quality floating betta pellet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, blackworms, or live baby brine shrimp, which helps maintain strong finnage and vibrant colour separation.
