Longfin Panda Corydoras

The Longfin Panda Corydoras is a selectively bred variety of the ever-popular Panda Cory, adored for its gentle demeanour and endearing appearance. What makes this variant stand out is the flowing, elongated fins that add a touch of elegance to an already charming species. These fish are ideal for aquarists seeking something peaceful, low-maintenance, and visually striking to occupy the bottom layer of a community tank.

Retaining the classic panda-like colouration of black patches on a creamy white to peach-toned body, the Longfin Panda Cory displays dark markings around the eyes, on the dorsal fin, and near the tail base, just like a miniature panda. The addition of graceful long fins elevates their aesthetic, making them a delightful contrast against fine sand or dark substrates. Under soft lighting or in a planted setup, the subtle shimmer of their body and trailing fins gives them a dreamlike quality. Reaching around 5 cm, they are small but active fish that bring movement and life to the lower parts of the tank.

Breeding Longfin Panda Corydoras is certainly achievable. Like most cory species, they are egg scatterers. Condition a group with high-quality live or frozen food, then simulate a rain season with a small temperature drop. Females tend to be rounder, and males will chase them during courtship. Removing the adults after spawning can prevent egg predation but providing soft-leafed plants or spawning mops for egg attachment means the eggs can be removed.

Tank Recommendations for your Longfin Panda Corydoras

A minimum tank size of 70 litres is suitable, especially for small schools. Use soft, sandy substrate to protect their delicate barbels. A well-planted tank with driftwood, caves, and plenty of shaded areas will help these fish thrive. Panda corydoras can also be kept in cooler water temperatures ranging from 20 all the way to 26 degrees.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Longfin Panda Corydoras are peaceful, social fish perfect for community tanks. They won’t bother other tank mates and do best with similarly tempered species.

Usually Compatible

Angelfish, cardinal tetras, rams, discus, and similar peaceful South American species.

Sometimes Compatible

Mystus catfish, convict cichlids, pearsi cichlids, and other peaceful species for territorial species.

Rarely Compatible

Large and aggressive species such as oscars, which may prey on the Corydoras. This is especially important as Corydoras have spines on their pectoral fins like many catfish; this can result in both the corydoras and the predator fish’s death.

Feeding your Longfin Panda Corydoras

Just like any other corydoras, these fish are very easy to feed. They will take a wide range of pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. Just like any fish, though, they should be fed a varied diet with a mix of different foods. The ideal diet would be a good quality micro slow sinking pellet or crushed flake, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, live micro worms.
