Lionfish Devil Haz - Medium
Lionfish look majestic, but anyone with the knowledge will know these placid-looking creatures have a sinister side. Wow your guests with tales of their poisonous spines, all the while creating a focal masterpiece in your aquarium.
The Devil Lionfish is a species of venomous marine fish, it has red, white, creamy, or black warning colors, showy pectoral fins, and venomous, spiky fin rays. This species of Lionfish is also refered to as the common Lionfish. All species of Lionfish are common in aquariums as they are relatively easy to keep.
It's not recommended to keep them in a tank with small reef fish as these fish can grow relatively large. Also studies have found they feed almost continuously from early to late morning on, you guessed it, small reef fish.
The male and female of the species are almost identical, but they are unlikely to breed in a small aquarium, so this is unlikely to be a concern.
The Devil Lionfish is native to the western Indo-Pacific region and the Red Sea. In the western Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea they have become an invasive species.
Tank Recommendations for Lionfish Devil Has
This species should be kept in a tank with a minimum volume of 250L
It's not advisable to keep them in a reef tank environment because of the sheer volume of excrement they produce. You will need to have an extremely sophisticated filtration system to keep them in a reef environment successfully.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Lionfish are placid yet fierce predators which may seem like an oxymoron. They are only interested in prey smaller than the size of their mouth, which makes them great tank buddies to any fish 5 centimeters or above.
Do not keep Lionfish in a community tank as they will most likely devour the smaller members of the community.
Usually Compatible
Other Lionfish will make perfect tank buddies for these fish. Other species that can be housed with them are larger Angelfish, Groupers, and Snappers, these will all share the same tank with ease.
Sometime Compatible
Be causious when mixing them with Frogfish, Crustaseans, Goatfish and Triggerfish. Only larger members of these species are recommended. They are one of the very few species that are compatible with Sharks, but caution should always be taken.
Rarely Compatible
Do not mix them in a tank with Basslets, Blennies, Cardinalfish, Clownfish or Gobies. The reason for this is they will inevitibly become dinner for the relentless feeding habits of your Lionfish.
Feeding your Devil Lionfish
Lionfish are most definately carniverous. They instictively prey on live food, but if introduced to frozen food early, they can thrive on the likes of frozen shrimp. You should aim to feed them only once a day, otherwise they will heavily pollute your tank with waste.
