Golden Axolotl

Axolotls have become one of the most fascinating aquatic pets in the hobby due to their unique appearance, quirky personality, and incredible regenerative abilities. The Golden Axolotl is one of the most eye-catching colour morphs available, prized for its bright yellow-gold body and contrasting pink to red gill filaments. For keepers wanting something truly different from traditional fish, axolotls are always a standout.

Golden axolotls display a soft golden yellow to bright canary body colour that can vary in intensity depending on genetics and lighting. Their most striking feature is the large, feathery external gills that branch out from both sides of the head, often displaying a soft pink, peach, or red tone that contrasts beautifully against the yellow body. Their wide, smiling face, rounded limbs, and slow, almost floating movement give them a very endearing appearance. In larger aquariums, they are constantly exploring the base of the tank and gently gliding through the water column.

Sexing axolotls becomes easier as they mature, with males generally developing a more pronounced cloacal bulge, while females become noticeably rounder through the body, especially when carrying eggs. Breeding usually occurs during cooler seasonal conditions, with males depositing spermatophores that the female picks up before laying eggs individually across plants and décor.

Tank Recommendations for your Golden Axolotl

A single adult axolotl should be housed in an aquarium of at least 80–100 litres, with larger aquariums always preferred for stability and movement space. A soft sand substrate or bare-bottom aquarium is best, as gravel can easily be swallowed and cause impaction. Driftwood hides, caves, and low lighting work very well. One of the most important factors is temperature—axolotls must be kept cool, ideally between 16–20°C, and should never be treated like tropical fish.

Suitable Tank Buddies

Axolotls are best kept alone or with other similarly sized axolotls.

Feeding your Golden Axolotl

Golden axolotls are carnivorous and extremely food-driven, often learning to come forward at feeding time. Because they swallow food whole, appropriately sized foods are important. The ideal diet would be quality axolotl pellets, earthworms, blackworms, or small pieces of prawn offered in manageable portions. Earthworms, in particular, are one of the best staple foods for long-term health.
