Glowlight Tetra
The Glowlight Tetra is a common but often unseen species in the freshwater aquarium world, being an elegant, peaceful schooling species that brings a pop of radiant colour without overwhelming the aquascape. Native to the soft, blackwater streams of South America, this tetra’s gentle nature and glowing appearance have made it a staple in planted tanks and nano communities for decades, although it remains quite underrated.
Glowlight tetras are named for their stunning iridescent stripe that runs from the snout to the base of the tail, which is a bright neon orange that appears to glow under aquarium lighting. This shimmering line is especially vibrant when the fish are kept in a planted tank with a dark substrate or background. The rest of their body is translucent silver, adding a delicate, glass-like contrast that makes their glowing feature even more pronounced. Reaching a maximum size of just 4–5 cm, these tetras are ideal for smaller aquariums or large schools in mid-sized setups.
Breeding Glowlight Tetras is possible, though slightly more challenging than other beginner fish. These fish are egg scatterers and will benefit from a dedicated breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. The female will scatter eggs across the substrate or plants, which the male then fertilises. Once eggs are laid, it's best to remove the adults to avoid predation. Fry hatch in 24–36 hours and require infusoria or similar micro-foods in their early stages.
Tank Recommendations for your Glowlight Tetra
Glowlight tetras are best kept in a minimum 40-litre aquarium, especially if a school of six or more is desired. A soft, slightly acidic environment with dim lighting, plenty of plant cover, and a dark substrate will not only help them feel safe but also bring out their best colours. These fish are mid-water dwellers, so the focus can be on vertical tank space and lush aquascaping.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Glowlight tetras are an excellent choice for peaceful community aquariums. Their small size and passive behaviour make them perfect for calm tank mates, though avoid anything large enough to view them as food.
Usually Compatible
Neon tetras, ember tetras, harlequin rasboras, corydoras, otocinclus, dwarf gouramis, cherry barbs, and peaceful livebearers.
Sometime Compatible
Angelfish, bettas, or rams, depending on temperament and tank size. These species can show mild or repeated territorial aggression.
Rarely Compatible
Large or aggressive species such as oscars, jaguar cichlids, or predatory catfish.
Feeding your Glowlight Tetras
Glowlight tetras are not picky eaters and will readily accept a range of foods. A high-quality micro pellet or flake is perfect for daily feeding, and variety can be added through live or frozen treats such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia.
