Galaxias Dwarf
Galaxiella Pusilla, also known as the dwarf Galaxia, is a freshwater fish species that are native to the southern regions of Australia and is hardly ever seen in the aquarium hobby. Galaxias are a really underrated family of native Australian fish which are very adaptable to a range of conditions. For aquarists chasing a simple species-only aquarium or a unique fish to add to a cold water community tank, this will be a great consideration.
The Galaxiella Pusilla has a slender and elongated body, with a light brown to olive-green body coloration. Galaxias is a scaleless fish and has a skin instead which has a stunning metallic sheen. The green body colour is broken by a series of horizontal lines that travel from head to tail. The underbelly contrasts this with a creamy white which really just highlights the simplicity of this fish. Some other notable features include this fish's rounded snout and comically large eyes, which give it a unique appearance. These fish only reach around 6 cm and have a lifespan of around 5 years in captivity.
Breeding the Galaxiella pusilla is relatively straightforward as they are egg scatterers. It is difficult to sex these fish visually as they have no distinguishable external differences between males and females. However, breeding can be stimulated through a gradual temperature increase and the use of spawning mops. The eggs will hatch within 7 to 10 days, and the fry can be fed with infusoria or small fry foods.
Tank Recommendations for your Galaxiella Pusilla
Since these fish only reach around 6 cm, a school of 5-6 only needs an aquarium of 70 litres however a larger tank will be better. Through these fish are hardy, they can be slightly sensitive to drastic parameter swings, It is essential to maintain stable water parameters with a pH between 6.5-7.5 and a temperature of 20° Celsius. A planted tank with river stones, driftwood, and hiding places is recommended since these fish can be slightly skittish. Having a tight-fitting lid is also a must because these dwarf galaxias will jump.
Suitable Tank Buddies

Usually Compatible
Pygmy perch, glass fish, other Galaxia species, hillstream loaches, danios, and other cold-water nano species.

Rarely Compatible
Larger and more aggressive fish species such as Oscars and peacock cichlids should not be kept with the Galaxiella pusilla due to the risk of predation. Tropical species should also be avoided.
