The Nimbochromis Fuscotaeniatus also commonly known as the Fusco cichlid is a popular predator African species from lake Malawi. This large-bodied hap is a must-have species for a species only or predator African cichlid aquarium which would be a unique spectacle to see. They are also a great fish to grow out from juveniles as they go through an amazing colour change as they mature as well.

As juveniles, the Fusco cichlid has a grey base colour with a brown mottling that starts from the gill plate and ends at the tail. This gives them a jaguar-like aesthetic which transitions to bolder colours as they get bigger. As an adult, the Fusco cichlid has a bright powder blue colouration that shines immensely on the face. From the gill plate onwards, they have red highlights on the scales that turn to stripes on the fins. These fish are a great change to the often dull coloured South American predator cichlids which is why they are so popular.  

The Nimbochromis Fuscotaeniatus will max out at an immense size of 25 cm. They are also classic open water, large-mouth predator fish which need to be kept with similar-sized and tempered fish. Breeding these fish is possible in the home aquarium, males tend to be larger and have bolder colours. The female will mouth brood the eggs and release fully matured fry into the aquarium which is a truly unique behavior to experience. 

Tank Recommendations for your Nimbochromis Fuscotaeniatus

The Nimbochromis Fuscotaeniatus is a large growing fish and active species that reaches around 25 cm long. Because of their territorial and at times aggressive behavior they do require a large aquarium with a minimum volume of 680 liters. 

Since the Fusco cichlid is an open water species the aquarium hardscape is not a major concern. Having a hardscape that will buffer the water to maintain an alkaline PH would be ideal for these fish, this can be achieved through the use of crushed coral sand or seriyu stone. Having the Fusco cichlid against a black background will really make the colours of this fish pop as well.

The Fusco is an aggressive fish that is best kept as species only or in a setting with similar-bodied fish that can hold their own.

Malawi trout, Strigatus cichlids, venustus cichlids and other lake Malawi Hap cichlids.

Large peacock cichlids, larger predator Tanganyikan cichlids

Smaller African cichlids such as calvus or shell dwellers may become easy prey to the Fusco cichlids

Feeding your Nimbochromis Fuscotaeniatus

Fusco cichlids are opportunistic feeders. They have large mouths and spend most of their time in the upper portions of the aquarium. Because of this behavior it would be ideal to feed this cichlid a floating pellet food that can be supplemented with additional protein-rich frozen foods.
