Flashlight Fish MED
Brighten up your aquarium with a Flashlight Fish. Its light organs give the impression of a beautiful glowing smile. Impress your friends with this unique addition to any nocturnal tank.
The Flashlight Fish is identifiable by its black body and blue dorsal and caudal fins. It gets its name from the bioluminescent bacteria, living in the light organs below each eye. The light from the symbiotic bacteria gives it the appearance of a gleaming smile.
The glow is normally white but can also be blue or yellow depending on the fish's mood. These fish have a remarkable capacity to turn the light organ within its socket to switch it on and off. The light organ can be used in a variety of ways. This includes conversing with one another by raising the blink frequency. This species can reach a length of 9 inches (22.9 centimetres).
Details about this species' reproduction are scarce. They're thought to be broadcast spawners.
The Flashlight Fish inhabits the central and western Pacific region. Areas include Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, and the Great Barrier Reef. It stays in deep water except during winter months. Usually near caves and drop offs between depths of 200–400 m (660–1,310 ft).
