The Pseudotropheus Demasoni, also known as the Demasoni Cichlid is a vibrant and eye-catching fish that brings a burst of colour and activity to the African cichlid aquarium. Their striking appearance, relatively small size, and lively nature make them a desirable addition to a Lake Malawi aquarium or similar setup. Keep in mind, however, that these fish can be more territorial and aggressive compared to most African cichlids so careful consideration of tankmates is essential.

The Demasoni Cichlid has a classic mbuna cichlid body shape. They have a long, almost cylindrical body shape which has an amazing pattern of electric blue and jet black barring. The natural vibrancy of this blue is simply stunning under good aquarium LED lighting and these fish will be an absolute eye-catcher. One of the biggest benefits to these cichlids is that females also have similar vibrant colours. These cichlids are a small size compared to many other African cichlids, typically reaching a maximum length of around 8 cm but have a fiery personality.

Breeding Pseudotropheus Demasoni in captivity is achievable, but it can be challenging due to its aggressive nature. They are mouthbrooders, with the female holding the fertilized eggs in her mouth until they hatch. After the fry is released, the parents do not provide any further care.

Tank Recommendations for your Pseudotropheus Demasoni

A minimum tank size of 150 liters is recommended for a group of these fish. To replicate their natural habitat, provide plenty of rockwork with caves and crevices for hiding and territory establishment. Having a lot of visual breaks will be great to diffuse the aggression. A sandy substrate is ideal, and water temperature should be maintained between 24-28°C with a pH level of 7.8-8.6.

Suitable Tank Buddies

The Pseudotropheus Demasoni can be quite aggressive, especially towards other cichlids of similar size or appearance. It is essential to choose tankmates wisely to ensure no fish gets injured or stressed.

Usually Compatible

Other Mbuna cichlids with different colour patterns, larger peaceful Malawi cichlids, catfish, and other robust species.

Sometimes Compatible

Smaller, more peaceful cichlids such as shell dwellers may be harassed by the Demasoni. It is better to avoid species smaller than these cichlids.

Rarely Compatible

Fish with similar colour patterns, slow-moving fish, or small, timid species may be bullied or injured by the aggressive Demasoni. Larger cichlids like eye biters may also eat the demasoni.

Feeding your Pseudotropheus Demasoni

Demasoni Cichlids are primarily herbivorous, and their diet should be rich in plant-based foods. Provide high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes with a vegetable component, as well as blanched vegetables like spinach, peas, or zucchini. Occasional protein-rich treats, such as brine shrimp or daphnia, can also be offered.
