Fully-grown Convict Cichlids typically reach around 15 cm in length. They are easily recognized by their bold black and white vertical stripes, which comically look like old-fashioned prison uniforms, hence their common name. Aside from the black and white colour, they can also display a blue sheen and iridescent scales. The males are generally larger with more pronounced dorsal and anal fins, while females are smaller and have more vibrant colour, especially when ready to breed they display an intense orange-red colouration on their bellies.
When it comes to breeding, Convict Cichlids are incredibly easy to breed in captivity. These are almost like guppies where there’s essentially no involvement required. As long as there is a suitable tank with a male and female, they will breed. Both parents participate in egg care and raising of the fry, which is a unique experience to watch. They can become exceedingly territorial and aggressive during this time even chasing away hands in the tank during maintenance time.
Tank Recommendations for your Convict Cichlid
Convict Cichlids, due to their territorial nature, require a tank of at least 150 liters for a pair. They prefer setups that offer numerous hiding spots such as caves, tunnels, and overhangs. They are not particular about plants, but any plant should be well rooted or epiphyte as these cichlids are known to dig. The water temperature should range between 24-28°C with a pH level of 6.0-7.5.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Convict Cichlids are territorial and can be aggressive, especially when breeding, hence the careful selection of tank mates is essential.
Usually Compatible
Robust, similarly-sized fish that can hold their own are generally the best companions. These may include, other medium-sized cichlids like fire mouths, and catfish species like plecos.
Sometimes Compatible
Peaceful large tetras like Black Widows or Congos. Other common community species like angelfish may get along, but it comes down to aquarium size and stocking density.
Rarely Compatible
Small, docile, or slow-moving fish are not ideal as they could be bullied or attacked. Large predatory fish are also unsuitable such as peacock bass as they would eat the convict cichlid.
Feeding your Convict Cichlid
Convict Cichlids are omnivorous and have a robust appetite. A balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with live, frozen, or freeze-dried foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia will ensure their health. Occasionally, they can also be offered blanched vegetable matter like zucchini or pumpkin.
