Profile

The Conspicuous Angelfish (Scientific Name:Chaetodontoplus conspicillatus) can be found from the southern Great Barrier Reef to the central New South Wales coast and Lord Howe Islands. Adults are found around coral and rocky reefs, with the Juveniles living in shallower water in protected harbours and bays. These rare, beautifully marked fish can grow up to 12 inches (30cm) and are considered the Holy Grail for most Aquarists.

Feeding Your Conspicuous Angelfish (Diet)

These fish are omnivores so you can give them a varied diet of veg and meat. Vegetable matter for example: frozen or steamed spinach leaves, frozen foods containing spirulina algae and Nori (seaweed select or other). Also a mixed variety of meaty foods including chopped shrimp, clams, squid, and other fish may be tried.

Tank Requirements (habitat)

The minimum size of your tank should be at least 682 litres (150 gallons). The bigger the better! Tall tanks preferred. Water conditions 25.5-28.8° C (78-84° F), dKH 3-8, pH 6.8-7.8, sg 1.020-1.025 Be cautious about introducing to a reef tank as these guys love to snack and nip on encrusting invertebrates, hard corals, tubeworms, and clam mantles, and may also have a nip at the oral discs of sea anemones.

Tank Buddies (compatibility)

When choosing tankmates for your Conspicuous Angelfish, make sure that you pick non-aggressive chilled species that will not nip at their large, flowing fins. Conspicuous Angelfish are generally peaceful, but can be very aggressive eaters and become territorial while breeding.

Good Tank Buddies

Species such as Basslets, Batfish, Blennies, Boxfish, Butterfly Fish, Clown Fish, Damsels, Rabbit Fish, Sweetlips, Hogfish, Parrot fish, Puffers, Tangs and Surgeons are all good choices for a drama free tank.

Difficult Tank Buddies

Caution should be taken when considering species such as Cardinals, Dartfish, Eels, Filefish, Gobies, Groupers, Jawfish, Lionfish/Scorpions, Triggerfish, Cleaner Wrasse, Invertebrates, Live Corals and other Angels. Conspicuous Angelfish can be quite territorial and aggressive to the same sex when horny.

Incompatible Tank Buddies

Species which are a definite no-no include (some) Sharks, Rays, Seahorses (what those cute little guys again?), and pipefish. Conspicuous Angelfish although peaceful are quite tough and hardy and won't get bullied easily. That's why they are always a great addition to your tank. 3
