Pimelodus Ornatus 7cm
Pimelodus ornatus is a striking and active species of catfish that brings both movement and character to larger aquariums. Known for its distinctive spotted pattern and streamlined body, this species is a great choice for aquarists looking for an energetic mid-to-bottom dwelling fish that stands out from more traditional catfish species.
This species displays a silver to pale grey body covered in bold black spotting that runs along the length of the fish, creating a highly recognisable pattern. The body is elongated and built for movement, with a forked tail that allows for strong swimming. Long barbels extend from the mouth and are constantly in motion as the fish searches for food. Unlike many bottom-dwelling catfish, Pimelodus species are quite active swimmers and will often be seen cruising through the mid-water column as well.
Sexing is difficult, as males and females look very similar. Breeding is rarely achieved in home aquariums due to the species’ size and requirements, and most specimens available are either captive-bred or wild-caught.
Tank Recommendations for your Pimelodus Ornatus
A minimum aquarium size of 200–300 litres is recommended due to their active swimming behaviour. They do best in aquariums with open swimming space and moderate flow, along with driftwood or caves for shelter. Secure lids are recommended, as they can be quite active.
