Brilliant Head Rummynose Tetra

The Rummynose Tetra would have to be one of the most easily recognised fish in the world and is often one of the first tetras that aquarists get. This species is known for its vibrant coloration and peaceful nature, making it a standout choice for community aquariums. Through the decades of being in the aquarium hobby, there is actually a stunning genetic variation that has popped up the brilliant head rummynose tetra.

The rummynose tetra is easily recognisable by its signature bright red face however this strain takes this to another level with a much deeper blood-red face. The red also goes further into the fish ending just before the pectoral fins. The body of the brilliant head rummynose tetra is also much more silver and very metallic compared to its standard counterpart. the tail fin features bold black and white horizontal stripes, adding to the fish's distinctive appearance. Growing to about 5 cm in length, Rummynose tetras are slender and elegant, with a gentle, fluid motion that is mesmerising to watch.

Brilliant head rummynose tetras are peaceful, social fish that thrive in groups, making them ideal for community aquariums. They are schooling fish, which means they should be kept in groups of at least six, though larger schools are even more impressive. When in a group, these tetras exhibit synchronised swimming, creating an awesome display as they move together through the tank. Rummynose tetras are sensitive to water conditions and will lose their vibrant red coloration if stressed or if water quality deteriorates. Breeding brilliant head rummynose tetras can be challenging, as they require very specific water parameters, including soft, slightly acidic water. In a breeding setup, providing dense plant cover or spawning mops helps mimic their natural environment and offers protection for the eggs. After spawning, the parents should be removed, as they may eat the eggs.

Tank Recommendations for Brilliant Head Rummynose Tetra
A school of brilliant head rummynose tetras should be housed in an aquarium of at least 60 litres, though larger tanks are preferred to accommodate their active swimming behaviour. They thrive in well-planted tanks that replicate their natural habitat, with plenty of hiding spots among plants, driftwood, and rocks. A dark substrate will help highlight their colours, especially the vibrant red nose. Rummynose tetras prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 and a temperature of 24-28°C. Good water quality is essential, as they are sensitive to changes in parameters.

Suitable Tank Buddies
Brilliant head rummynose tetras are peaceful and do well with other small, non-aggressive fish that share similar water requirements. Their calm demeanour and striking appearance make them excellent companions in a community tank, where they can coexist with a variety of species.

Usually Compatible
Shrimp, corydoras, khuli loaches, other tetras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. borneo suckers, ender guppie,s and similar nano species

Sometimes Compatible
Slightly larger fish, such as angelfish or gouramis, can be compatible with rummynose tetras if they are not too aggressive. Care should be taken to monitor interactions, as more territorial species may stress the tetras.

Rarely Compatible
Large, aggressive fish like Oscars, Jack Dempseys, or any species that could view rummynose tetras as prey should be avoided. Additionally, fin-nipping species, such as certain barbs, can cause stress and damage to the delicate-bodied rummynose tetras.

Feeding your Brilliant Head Rummynose Tetra
Brilliant head rummynose tetras are omnivores and will accept a wide variety of foods in the aquarium. A balanced diet of high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia will keep them healthy and vibrant. It's important to provide small, easily digestible foods that they can quickly consume, as they have small mouths.
