The Green Betta Api Api is a stunning fish, both the male and female look equally beautiful with their saturated contrast of red and green. The face and fins of the Api Api betta are a deep wine red that almost looks like matte paint, it’s a single bold shade which is something you don’t see too often in other aquarium fish. The green part of the name comes from the metallic jade green scales that start from after the gill plate and end before the tail, these shimmer under aquarium lighting and really stand out from the near-black colour that surrounds the scales. The fins are lined with a white rim which really defines the red, like many other wild bettas the fins of this species are compact and don’t flow like captive species.
Breeding Green Betta Api Api can be challenging, but rewarding. Males will build a bubble nest near the surface of the water, and females will lay their eggs in the nest. After hatching, the male will care for the fry. Sexing the fish is relatively easy as males have larger and more pointed fins, while females have shorter and rounder fins. There isn’t much effort required to sex these fish as you get a confirmed pair of male and female in this pack.
Tank Recommendations for Green Betta Api Api
These fish are best suited for a species-only tank as they can easily be stressed out by other tank mates. An aquarium that has a minimum volume of 40 liters is required for this pair to ensure they have enough space, in small environments the pair can get slightly territorial but are generally peaceful. Having a thin, sandy substrate with some botanicals, floating plants, and driftwood will create an ideal environment for them. Using a sponge filter is great to have a low level of flow whilst also providing great filtration. The water temperature should be between 24-26°C, and the pH should be between 5.0-6.0.
Suitable Tank Buddies
Due to the rarity and value of these fish, it really would be recommended to keep them in a species-only setting however in the event you wanted to create a community display it would be best to keep these bettas with small-sized, peaceful species.
