WHAT IS pH?

Technically it is the measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration of a given sample of water. From this measurement, it can be determined whether the water is acid, neutral, or alkaline. The scale extends from 0 to 14. A pH between 0 and 7 is termed acid, and a pH between 7 and 14 is termed alkaline. The indicator in this kit has a pH range from 6.0 to 7.8 and is therefore suitable for most freshwater aquaria. At or below pH 6.0 the test sample would turn yellow. At or above pH 7.8 the test sample would turn blue.

WHY pH CHANGES

pH is not a constant factor and is subject to continual change due to influences like bacterial assimilation of waste causing acidity or calcium and magnesium compounds like shells or coral that cause alkalinity. Thus, under normal aquarium conditions, because of fish waste and unused food, the water would drift to acidity.

TYPICAL FRESHWATER CONDITIONS

Amazon River Systems - The water is soft, usually below 50ppm hardness, and has a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Water in rainforest rivers is conditioned by leaf tannins and humic and organic acids. Some leaching of ground minerals also occurs. These conditions are natural disease inhibitors for fish. Such water is suitable for Tetras, Discus, Angels, and Corydoras.
Use Aquasonic AMAZON WATER CONDITIONER to recreate these same conditions in an aquarium. The result is brighter and more active fish, with high resistance to disease.

Central American Rivers / Livebearers

- Water is quite hard – 300ppm up to 500ppm and a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Livebearers originate from varied habitats, such as rainforest streams, brackish swamps, and even saltwater inlets. Guppies, Swordtails, Platties, and Mollies find this water suitable, however, they can be susceptible to fungus and bacterial infections from water changes, tank movements, and catching fish. Aquasonic LIVEBEARER WATER CONDITIONER has been formulated to re-create natural conditions in your aquarium, fish bowl, or pond. It has the correct balance of salts, natural minerals, and trace elements, plus bacterial and fungal inhibitors to promote health and well-being.

Asian River Systems

Water is soft, mostly less than 50ppm, and has a pH from 5.0 to 7.0. Such water is suitable for Gouramis, Sharks, Barbs, etc. Aquasonic TROPICAL WATER CONDITIONER has been formulated to re-create natural conditions in your aquarium. It contains the correct balance of salts, natural minerals, and trace elements, plus bacterial and fungal inhibitors, to promote health and well-being.

Cold Water Systems

Water in these systems has a neutral pH of 6.5-7.5 and suits species such as Goldfish & Kio-carp etc. Aquasonic GOLDFISH WATER CONDITIONER has been formulated to re-create natural conditions in your aquarium, fish bowl, and pond. It contains the correct balance of salts, natural minerals, and trace elements, plus bacterial and fungal inhibitors, to promote health and well-being.

USING pH TO ADVANTAGE

During the development of bacteria in a biological filter, ammonia and nitrite conditions exist. Both are deadly to fish. The toxicity of ammonia and nitrite, however, is in direct relation to the pH value of the water in the system. By lowering the pH, the toxicity of these deadly conditions is minimized.

PRODUCTS FOR pH ADJUSTMENT

pH Down (contained in this kit) Use 5g (1 teaspoon) per 70L of water. Wait 12 hours and test pH before redosing. Re-dose at 12-hour intervals until the desired pH is reached.

pH Up (contained in this kit) Use 5g (1 teaspoon) per 70L of water. Wait 12 hours and test pH before re-dosing. Re-dose at 12-hour intervals until the desired pH is reached.

Carbonate Hardness Generator
Professional buffer for raising pH. Available in powder form, use 4 grams (1 teaspoon) to increase the Carbonate Hardness (kH) by 20ppm in 100L. kH the generator is a spectrum of pH buffers to provide a stable pH for longer in your aquarium.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

  1. Rinse a clean test tube and cap it several times in water to be tested.
  2. Fill the line (12.5ml) with water to be tested.
  3. Add 3 drops of Indicator Solution.
Place the test tube on the white background of the colour chart, and view it vertically (down inside the test tube) with the light behind you. The colour in the test tube is best viewed with natural light. View immediately.
  4. Note: Adjust pH slowly. * This colour chart provides a basic guide only. Colours may vary to various water conditions.*
