Black Calvus Cichlids have easily been one of the most sought-after lake Tanganyikan fish. These stunning dwarf cichlids have a unique body shape, stunning colouration, and a peaceful personality which makes them a total showpiece fish in both smaller and larger display aquariums. Their high demand and sale price also make them a fantastic consideration for a breeding project.

The Black Calvus has got to be one of the most contrasting and striking Tanganyikan cichlid species. These fish almost look like the night sky with a barred grey and black body with hundreds of white spots that start just after the pectoral fin and finish at the tail. Across the nape of the face and lower belly region, there is also a very light olive-green hue for some additional contrast. There is also a hue of navy blue around the lips and fins. These fish look like mini Australian barramundi with their own stunning flare which might be another point of attraction for aquarists who can’t keep large growing fish and are looking for a smaller alternative. Black Calvus Cichlids are also relatively peaceful and they prefer to be kept in colonies which means they look absolutely stunning in numbers over six as their colour contrasts in the tank. Their rock and large shell dwelling behaviour also offers hours of fun as you see this species darting in and out of the aquascape showing off their curious behaviour.

Breeding Black Calvus can be challenging but usually just takes time and the right environment. It is generally best to try to breed them in a species-only setting where a pair is placed into a dedicated breeding tank, this aquarium should have a decent sand bed with rock caves or large shells that the fish can fit in in order to lay eggs. Sexing these fish can also be difficult as both males and females look quite similar, males do tend to be larger with bolder colours but it would be best to start off with a group and let them pair off.

Tank Recommendations for your Altolamprologus Calvus Black

As the Black Calvus Cichlid only reaches around 13 cm, an adult pair of these fish can easily be kept in a tank of around 100 litres. They will however thrive in larger aquariums when kept in a colony of 6 or more. Since these cichlids spend a lot of time near the bottom of the aquarium it is best to ensure there is a decent footprint.

The Black Calvus Cichlids can be territorial, especially during breeding time however their aggression is quite minimal compared to other African cichlids. They should be provided with a plentiful supply of caves for security and just to diffuse the minimal aggression. These are also tropical fish which are best kept at 24-26 degrees.

Back Calvus Cichlids can be kept with a range of other smaller and relatively peaceful African Cichlids. Since these fish require a higher PH of around 8 the tank mates chosen should be adaptable to this.
