Albino Peacock Cichlid
The Albino Peacock is a beautiful African cichlid that is commonly bred in captivity. It is a must-have for any African peacock display style aquarium and will really stand out against other fish. The unique thing about this fish is that it has the albino gene present! This means it lacks pigmentation giving it the stunning copper, gold look you can see in the picture along with the dark orange eye and extreme blue iridescence. The albino peacock will get to around 17 cm (7 inches). African peacocks are commonly known to be semi-aggressive fish with aggression only coming out with territorial fights or breeding. The Albino peacocks are known to be a bit more peaceful as their vision is not as good in comparison to African cichlids without the albino gene. Trying to find the males and females in African peacocks is fairly easy however it can be a bit more challenging with albinos. The easiest method is to look at the egg spots on the anal fin of the fish. Males will have lots whereas females will have little to none. Albino peacocks are very rarely found in the wild but are extremely common in captive-bred peacocks. The wild habitat of the African peacock cichlid is lake Malawi of Africa.
Tank Recommendations for your Albino Peacock
The albino peacock is a very active fish that needs a tank that is at least 125 gallons (470 liters) and around 4 feet minimum width. Sand or crushed coral substrate is fine for the albino peacock but for the aquascape overall it would be best to replicate a rocky African lake biotope with rocks that increase the PH like Texas rock or Seriyu stone.
Suitable Tank Buddies
The albino peacock is fairly peaceful kept with other color variations of the peacock species. Consideration can be made to keep them with peaceful Mbunas and Haps.
