The African butterfly cichlid is a rare, underrated, and absolutely stunning, dwarf cichlid that makes a fantastic alternative to the more common South American species. These riverine African cichlids will be perfect to keep in a mixed community setting or even in a biotope-style aquarium and offer a unique exclusivity. These really will make for a great entry-level cichlid species for aquarists entering the cichlid world and a great breeding project to maintain these fish in the hobby.

African Butterfly Cichlid

The African butterfly cichlid is a rare, underrated, and absolutely stunning, dwarf cichlid that makes a fantastic alternative to the more common South American species. These riverine African cichlids will be perfect to keep in a mixed community setting or even in a biotope-style aquarium and offer a unique exclusivity. These really will make for a great entry-level cichlid species for aquarists entering the cichlid world and a great breeding project to maintain these fish in the hobby.

African butterfly cichlids do not have the brightest, flashiest colours compared to other dwarf cichlid species however the contrast and natural beauty these fish have is a sight to behold. The earthy-toned body overlaid with blue speckling, red accents, and jet-black body barring which changes based on mood creates a very dynamic fish. These are also great accent fish to add to a larger community as they add a great peaceful bottom dwelling dimension to the aquarium especially when kept in a group. Unlike most other African cichlids that require higher PH requirements, these fish come from a riverine environment which is why they can pretty much be treated like a South American cichlid species and be mixed with an an array of other river-dwelling fish.

African butterfly cichlids remain fairly small at 7cm maximum, they are also bred fairly easily in captivity as differentiating males and females is possible. Males tend to be more vibrant with much more obvious black barring, females on the other hand tend to sport their earthy browns and greens much more. The best method to breed these fish is to get a pack of 4-6 African butterfly cichlids and let them naturally pair off. A pair will usually lay eggs on a secluded smooth surface in the aquarium and guard the fry until they reach a free-swimming stage.

Tank Recommendations for your African Butterfly Cichlid
Being a dwarf species, the African butterfly cichlid can be kept in smaller aquariums however the minimum would be around 70 litres for a pair. As always though, a larger aquarium would be far better, and making sure there is a decent floor space can avoid any mild territorial behaviour that these fish may exhibit. They will also prefer a well-planted aquarium and hiding places like caves. A sand or small grain gravel substrate would be fine for these fish as they do routinely sift through the sand for food.

Suitable Tank Buddies
The African butterfly cichlid is an incredibly peaceful fish with very minimal aggression coming out with each other for territorial disputes and during breeding. Given a larger aquarium, these will be perfectly fine, and they can be kept with a wide range of community fish.

Usually Compatible
Angelfish, basically all tetras, corydoras, plecos, gourami, and a range of aquarium fish.

Sometimes Compatible
Larger peaceful South American cichlids such as Uaru, Severums, and other fish may outcompete them as they are mostly bottom-dwelling fish. They may also eat inverts like shrimp.

Rarely Compatible
Large and aggressive species such as African cichlids or Oscars may prey on the African butterfly cichlid.

Feeding your African Butterfly Cichlid
African butterfly cichlids are very easy to feed. They will take a wide range of pellets, flakes, and frozen foods. Just like any fish though they should be fed a varied diet with a mix of different foods. The ideal diet would be a good quality micro slow-sinking pellet or crushed flake, supplemented with frozen bloodworms or even live foods like baby brine shrimp.
