The Yabby is a freshwater crayfish, also known as a crawchie, crawdad, craybob or even lobbie, it's dependant on where you come from.
These are the Electric Blue varient, scientific name - Cherax Destructor
The colour can range from a pale blue to a deep electric blue.

Ideal water qualities are,
· pH: 7.0 - 8.0
· General Hardness: 50 - 300 ppm.
. Temperature 12.C - 20.C

They can grow to over 20cm

They are rather hardy and comfortable in cold or tropical water.
Keep note that they will dig and eat plants so not recommended for display or plant tanks.
They can be territorial so be sure to provide plenty of 'homes' / hiding places for them, they love to have thei own 'home' in the tank but also ood aeration is required.

Full colour is usually attained at around 10-12cm, provided water is clean and clear.
As most know, yabbies grow they shed their shell and at this time can be vulnerable and eaten by other tank inhabitants.
If for any reason yabbies lose a limb, be aware that there WILL be regrown over the next few moults.
As with other invertebrates, they are sensitive to copper treatments.

hey are fantastic at scavenging and will eat anything they come accross on the bottom of the tank, they also love Algae wafers, but are meat eaters also so dropping in some high protein fish food pellets will do them well and give them an all round good health.

Oh and don't forget..... Yabbies are also escaped artists so a cover glass is needed for them, or they just may wonder what is on the other side.
