The Yellowfin Angelfish has a dark brown body with metallic blue stripes running down it. Its pectoral fins are a more colourful golden yellow, which really catch the eye when it is moving. This has led to it also being called the Moonbeam Angelfish. A full-size adult is usually around 4 inches (10.1 centimetres) in length.

Sexing and breeding information is minimal for this species. They are hermaphroditic, and difficult to breed in an aquarium. As a rule, Centropyges aren't born a specific sex, but will be female when they reach adulthood. The biggest, most dominant female in a group will transition and become male. It is also possible for a male to change back to a female, although this takes longer.

The Yellowfin Angelfish is found in the Indian Ocean. Areas it inhabits include Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Western Thailand, and Sumatra. It prefers seabeds which contain rubble, and a small amount of coral. Usually swimming between depths of 3-20 metres.

Tank Recommendations for the Yellowfin Angelfish

Tank size needs to be 70 gallons (264.9 litres) capacity or larger for this species.

The Yellowfin Angelfish may be unsuitable for nano and reef aquariums as it likes to nip at some corals. Its tank should contain plenty of live rock and have a selection of caves and crevices for it to hide and shelter in.

It is important to house the Yellowfin Angelfish in a tank with plenty of space. If the environment is too cramped it will become quite aggressive.

Suitable Tank Buddies

The Yellowfin Angelfish is a semi-aggressive species. Aggression may be shown to conspecifics, other Angelfish, and other similar looking fish.

Its temperament will deteriorate in a smaller environment. As well as increasing aggression, it can make it more prone to nip at sessile invertebrates.

Usually Compatible

Suitable tank buddies include larger Angelfish, Chromis, Clownfish, Gobies, Pufferfish, and Tangs.

Sometime Compatible

Caution is advised with Frogfish, Eels, Groupers, Scorpionfish, Triggerfish and Wrasse. This species may also nip at corals and invertebrates.

Rarely Compatible

Avoid housing with other dwarf Angelfish. Large aggressive predators like Sharks and Rays are a threat. Slow movers such as Pipefish and Seahorses should be kept separately.

Feeding your Yellowfin Angelfish

The Yellowfin Angelfish is an omnivore. A suitable diet should include a range of meat and vegetable products. Foods such as mysis, brine brimp, and Angelfish preparations are all good choices. Veggie product like Spirulina, and marine algae should also be introduced. Feed two times per day.
